Enabling Adventure
"Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover." - Mark Twain
In all of our lives there is always a reason not to do something. This is especially true if you have a disability. We let these reason run wild in our minds without taking a moment to analyze the truth. The truth is that we are more scared of what we may discover than what may happen. We all have deep seated beliefs that are so ingrained in us that we become comfortable with our situation, but this comfort limits our happiness.
"Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure or it is nothing." - Helen Keller
It is always difficult to challenge ourselves. To move past our perceived limitations and discover our potential. After an injury many well meaning people tell us what we can and can not do. They place limitations in our mind the far outweigh our true capabilities. We have to challenge ourselves and test our limits everyday. This great journey of discovery is a bit scary, but very rewarding.
"Courage is not the absence of fear, but the judgement that something else is more important than fear." - Ambrose Redmoon
Take your time and set goals. Everyday challenge yourself. Even if you do not reach your goal you will discover something about yourself. This discovery will help you the next time. Don't let disappointment stop your progress. Use that disappointment and turn it into determination. Make it fuel your next endeavor.
"The purpose of life, after all, is to live it, to taste experience to the utmost, to reach out eagerly and without fear for newer richer experience." - Eleanor Roosevelt
Embrace this grand adventure with all of it's challenges. Take the knowledge we provide here and find your way. We at Adaptive Adventures know what lays ahead for you, because we've been there. Our disability may not be the same as yours, but the process is.
"It takes a lot of courage to release the familiar and seemingly secure, to embrace the new. But there is no real security in what is no longer meaningful . There is more security in the adventurous and exciting, for in movement there is life and in change there is power." - Alan Cohen
